The dichiarazione di valore
This is the step that catches applicants out, and it has no equivalent in most other destinations.
For academic purposes Italian institutions generally require a dichiarazione di valore — a declaration of value issued by the Italian consulate with jurisdiction over where the qualification was awarded. It states what the qualification is within the Indian system, what level it sits at, and what access it gives.
Note what that means: the declaration is issued by the consulate, not by a translator and not by us. No translation agency can produce one, and any suggesting otherwise is describing something they cannot deliver.
What we do is prepare the translated documents the consulate requires as input. The declaration then rests on those translations, which is why accuracy in rendering course titles, durations and grading matters here more than usual — an error propagates into an official document that the university relies on.
The practical consequence is scheduling. Consular processing takes time, university application windows are fixed, and the declaration cannot be rushed. Start earlier than seems necessary. We will tell you honestly if a deadline looks unachievable.
Italy’s sworn translation procedure
For legal use within Italy, translations are commonly sworn through a procedure before a court official, in which the translator formally attests the translation and it is recorded.
A translation certified in India may not substitute for this. Where a document is destined for an Italian court, a registry office or a notary, ask whether a sworn translation in Italy is required. Some purposes accept an apostilled original with a certified translation; others do not.
Qualifications rendered, not converted
We render an Indian qualification as awarded and do not assert an Italian equivalent. The declaration of value and the receiving institution determine standing under their own framework.
Grading is likewise reproduced as stated rather than converted onto the Italian scale. Transcripts are translated as complete sets, with the grading legend from the reverse of Indian marksheets included — without it the institution cannot interpret the marks.
Apostille and names
Italy is a Hague Convention member, so the apostille route applies. In the usual case the Indian original is apostilled and the translation accompanies it, with the consulate’s requirements determining the exact sequence.
Italian civil registration expects a clear division between given name and surname. Indian documents frequently supply a single undifferentiated name or an initial standing for a father’s name. We render the name as the document gives it and note the structure, rather than inventing a division that the original does not support.
Citizenship and civil registration
Italian residence and citizenship applications rest on civil status documents, and Italian registry offices are exacting about them.
Birth and marriage certificates must reconcile with each other and with a passport, and where an Indian document records a name differently from the passport — an expanded initial, a different transliteration, a surname adopted after marriage — that variance has to be addressed deliberately rather than smoothed over. We render what the document says and note the variance, which is usually what allows a registrar to proceed.
Where a registry office asks for evidence of free status before a marriage, Indian practice produces no exact counterpart. This is generally met with an affidavit, which is itself a privately issued document and therefore follows the longer authentication route: notarisation, state authentication, then apostille.
Ask the comune or the consulate exactly what they require before commissioning anything. For civil status matters this is where Italian expectations diverge most sharply from Indian documentary practice, and it is cheaper to ask than to redo.
