Portugal or Brazil — decide before ordering
These are different destinations with different requirements, and “Portuguese” alone is not enough to work from.
European and Brazilian Portuguese differ in vocabulary, and more importantly in administrative and legal terminology. Terms for civil registration, academic qualifications and official procedures are frequently not shared. A document prepared in Brazilian terminology submitted in Lisbon reads as foreign and can cause avoidable questions.
The procedures differ too. Brazil operates a sworn translator system, with translators registered through commercial boards, and for many official purposes a translation must come from one of them. Portugal handles certification differently, commonly through notarial or consular routes.
Tell us the country. Where a sworn translator in the destination is required, we will say so rather than sell you a document that will be refused.
The Goan citizenship route
A distinct and substantial category: people of Goan origin pursuing Portuguese citizenship by descent, which rests on civil registration records from the period of Portuguese administration.
These documents are their own specialism. They are often old, frequently handwritten in older Portuguese orthography, and use administrative vocabulary that has since fallen out of use. Registration formats differ from anything in current practice.
They also have to reconcile with modern Indian documents — a birth certificate from a Portuguese-era register has to be tied to a present-day passport, often across a name that has been transliterated differently at each stage. That reconciliation is usually the hard part of the application, and a careful translation with notes on name variance is what makes it legible to the reviewing authority.
Send the whole set together. Translated as a set, the generational chain reads coherently; translated piecemeal, it does not.
Apostille
Both Portugal and Brazil are Hague Convention members — Brazil since 2016, which is recent enough that older guidance sometimes still describes consular legalisation for Brazilian filings. It does not apply; check before paying for it.
In the usual case the Indian original is apostilled and the certified translation accompanies it. Where the destination requires a sworn translation produced locally, the apostilled original travels and is translated there instead.
Names and qualifications
Portuguese civil registration, like Spanish, expects a structured name and often two surnames. Indian documents rarely supply that. We render the name as given and note the convention rather than inventing elements to fill a form.
Qualifications are rendered as awarded, without asserting an equivalent, since recognition is the receiving authority’s determination under its own framework.
Academic recognition in each country
Portugal and Brazil assess foreign qualifications through different processes, and the documentation each expects differs accordingly.
In both cases we render the qualification as awarded and translate transcripts as complete sets, including the grading legend printed on the reverse of Indian marksheets. Without that legend an admissions office cannot convert a CGPA onto its own scale, and it is the element most often left out of photographs.
Where a professional qualification is involved — medicine, nursing, engineering — the relevant regulator usually verifies directly with the issuing institution in India. That makes exact transcription of registration numbers, council names and course titles more important than elegant phrasing, because a mismatch against the regulator’s own verification stalls the application.
